After Trump’s 50% Tariff, Amazon, Target, Walmart, Halt Order From India; Internet Says ‘Warning Bell For Jobs’

Donald Trump’s 50% tariff slapped on Indian exports is already bleeding businesses. Some of the bigwig retailers, including Amazon, Gap Inc., Target, and Walmart, among others, have halted orders, creating paranoia.

Indian exporters associated with these retailers have received emails directing them to stop shipment until further notice. New orders have been halted in the textile sector, as higher tariff rates will bump up pricing by 30-35%. Even as buyers want exporters to absorb the cost of tariffs, the industry stares at losing businesses to lower-tariff nations such as Bangladesh, Vietnam, and others.

It’s worth noting that major textile exporters in India make anywhere between 40 and 70 percent of sales in the US. The tariffs can undercut the margins exponentially.

American president Donald Trump imposed an additional 25% tariff on India, accusing the country of colluding with Russia by purchasing crude oil. India sharply objected to the tariff tantrums by Trump. GOI called out Trump’s tariff as ‘unfair, unjustified and unreasonable.’ LoP Rahul Gandhi dubbed it as “economic blackmail.”

Meanwhile, the Ministry of External Affairs also slammed the US for its double standard, wherein the country imports Uranium Hexafluoride and Palladium from Russia.

Reactions poured in online. One user remarked, “This isn’t just a trade hiccup—it’s a warning bell for jobs, exports & GDP. But sure, let’s pretend all is well and keep cooking the “fastest growing economy” narrative.” Another jibed, “Tirrupur shuru hone se pehle khatam hogaya.” A third user warned, “a 3 month disruption would wipe out the yearly profits for the textile players.”

Yet another user suggested, “Ask our exporters to route inventory via a country with a lower tariff; just rebrand it as made in that country.”
