AI Could Bring More Abundance, Time, And Bigger Families, Says OpenAI Boss Sam Altman

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, who welcomed his first child earlier this year, has opened up about his new outlook on life. Calling parenthood “amazing,” Altman stressed the importance of building families and communities, while warning that declining birth rates pose a “real problem” for the future. Speaking on the People by WTF podcast with Indian entrepreneur Nikhil Kamath, he urged that family-building should be given greater priority in the years ahead, alongside advancements in artificial intelligence.

Sam Altman believes family and community are central to happiness, and he hopes society will “turn back to that.” Speaking about the role of AI, the OpenAI CEO said that artificial general intelligence (AGI), once achieved, could ease the pressures of modern life and make raising children more manageable. “AGI will allow for a world where people have more abundance, more time, more resources, and potential, and ability,” he explained, suggesting that in such a future, families could thrive with greater support.

Altman stressed that in a post-AGI era, family and community “will become far more important.” Reflecting on his own recent experience of becoming a father, he described it as deeply fulfilling: “It felt like the most important and meaningful and fulfilling thing I could imagine doing.” He even admitted to being “extremely kid-pilled,” a tech-world phrase for being fully converted to the joys of parenthood.

His early days of fatherhood also highlighted how AI fits into the picture. Altman confessed that during the newborn stage, he was “constantly” asking ChatGPT for guidance, showing how even childcare could become a natural use case for AI. On The OpenAI Podcast in June, he added, half-jokingly, that “my kids will never be smarter than AI,” but stressed that they will grow up “vastly more capable than we grew up” by learning to use intelligent systems effectively.

Altman now considers mastering AI as fundamental as learning to read or write, and plans to ensure his children adopt those skills early. He isn’t alone in his pro-family stance—Elon Musk has long been outspoken about declining birth rates. Back in 2022, Musk declared, “A collapsing birth rate is the biggest danger civilisation faces by far,” and quipped that he was “doing [his] best to help the underpopulation crisis.”
