An Air India flight from Mumbai to Jodhpur was forced to abort its take-off on Friday, August 22, after an operational issue was detected. Flight AI645, scheduled to depart from Mumbai Airport’s Terminal 2 at 9:25 am, returned to the bay when the cockpit crew decided to halt the take-off run as a safety precaution.
Crew Prioritised Passenger Safety
According to the airline, the cockpit crew followed standard operating procedures and discontinued the take-off run after detecting the issue. The decision was made to ensure the safety of all passengers onboard. The aircraft was brought back to the bay and passengers were later accommodated on alternative flights to Jodhpur.

Assistance and Alternative Arrangements
Air India expressed regret over the delay and stated that it had arranged alternative flights to minimise inconvenience for affected passengers. The ground staff at Mumbai Airport extended immediate support, helping travellers with rebookings and providing assistance at the terminal. The airline stressed that passenger wellbeing and safety remain its top priority.
Similar Incident in Kochi
The aborted take-off in Mumbai followed a similar event in Kochi just a few days earlier, on August 17. A Delhi-bound Air India flight from Kochi had also aborted take-off after a technical issue was detected during the take-off roll. The aircraft was returned to the bay for mandatory maintenance checks.
That flight, AI504, was rescheduled to depart later in the day after the airline arranged a replacement aircraft. Among the passengers on board was parliamentarian and Congress leader Hibi Eden. Cochin International Airport Limited confirmed that the airline had switched the aircraft to ensure passenger safety and to comply with aviation protocols.
Focus on Safety Standards
While two such incidents within a short span may concern travellers, aviation experts highlight that these measures demonstrate that safety protocols are working effectively. Aborting take-off is considered a critical precaution when crews detect any anomaly, and such actions are intended to prevent potential risks.
Air India has reiterated that passenger safety and wellbeing remain central to its operations. The airline continues to enhance safety measures and ensure that operational procedures are strictly followed across its network.
