Sabrina Carpenter’s live shows aren’t just musically delectable—they offer a full-on visual and theatrical spectacle. On Saturday night, Carpenter headlined ACL Fest, delivering the most anticipated performance of the weekend with hit songs like “Manchild,” “Please Please Please,” and “Espresso.” Built around a retro television theme, the set leaned into kitsch, with an ad break for Manchild Spray Away and a dance contest with a dial-in voting schtick. Comprised of a glittery yellow gingham shirt and sparkling denim shorts with white cowboy boots, Carpenter’s first outfit played into the Texas locale and looked absolutely iconic.
During the relentlessly flirty and fun performance, Carpenter poked fun at her height (“Everything’s bigger in Texas… except me”), included a segment from Ginuwine’s “Pony” in her song “Bed Chem,” and chugged an espresso martini while the crowd cheered her on. Plus, she incorporated several hallmark elements typical of her shows. Let’s break down all the special moments from the evening.
Who were the special guests?
While rumors of Taylor Swift swirled ahead of the night due to the recent collaborative song from the pair, the Life of a Showgirl singer was nowhere in sight. Instead, Carpenter brought out country legend Shania Twain, and the two performed a cover of “That Don’t Impress Me Much.” Twain made a solo appearance just two years ago at ACL when she headlined the Honda stage, and she seemed positively thrilled to be back.
Who got arrested?
Just before performing her song “Juno,” Carpenter glanced out into the crowd as cameras panned over to find musician and Stranger Things actor Joe Keery, whom she arrested “for being too hot.” Only an hour earlier, Keery had been performing with his music project, Djo, on a stage just a few hundred yards away. Stranger Things fans have just a little over a month to wait before the final season of the hit Netflix show premieres.
What was the position during “Juno”?
Have you ever tried this one? Making her way down the runway from the main stage area, two backup dancers handed off confetti cannons, which Carpenter fired into the air with a huge grin on her face. It may not be the most obviously raunchy position (see: the Eiffel Tower from her Paris show), but it doesn’t take too much imagination to get the innuendo.
