SAN ANTONIO – The Antonian volleyball team is on the cusp of claiming a sixth TAPPS 6A state championship, determined to end a two-year streak of runner-up finishes.
With a 26-12 record and a scorching 9-1 run in their last 10 matches, the Apaches want to dethrone three-time defending champion Prestonwood Christian, the team that has repeatedly spoiled their title dreams.
Antonian’s head coach, Samantha McLure, with 20 years at the helm, is confident in her squad’s ability to break through.
“Oh, they can,” said Antonian volleyball head coach Samantha McLure. “I have all the belief in the world. It’s whether or not they believe it. I guess as coaches, that (is) our main thing is to make these kids believe that they can do something that nobody else thinks that they can do.”
At a recent practice, the Apaches’ team chemistry was on display and the players said their friendship is the backbone of their success.
“We’re just like one big friend group,” said Antonian senior libero Carley Leal. “We have so many different personalities, from big to quiet. Before games, (we) like to dance around and we like to get each other high. I feel like we have so many different girls to hype each other up.”
This weekend, Antonian heads to Dallas for a tournament, where they will see familiar playoff teams like Prestonwood Christian.
A strong performance could propel the Apaches toward their championship goal in 2025.
