The entertainer has been named the official Global Ambassador for Sun Day, which is the world’s first international day of action and celebration for clean energy. Launching September 21, 2025, Sun Day is poised to become a global call to action that merges climate justice, culture, and community engagement.
Founded by climate author and 350.org co-founder Bill McKibben, Sun Day champions the use of solar and wind power as crucial solutions for a cleaner and more equitable future. From solar-powered concerts to electric bike parades and community rallies, the grassroots initiative will unite communities around the world to push for climate solutions we already have.
“As the official Ambassador of Sun Day, I am excited to educate and encourage communities across the globe to understand the importance of clean energy and solar power,” Smith said in a statement. “We all have a responsibility to fight climate change. Solar energy is cheaper, healthier, and a job creator.”
The announcement arrives at a pivotal moment, as President Trump’s controversial “Big Beautiful Bill” threatens major clean energy tax incentives. For example, the 30% solar installation credit and the $7,500 electric vehicle rebate. These are benefits that millions of Americans depend on. With deadlines fast approaching, Sun Day serves as a rallying cry in a “solar sprint” to secure and expand clean energy access before it’s too late.
Smith is no stranger to activism. In 2024, she co-founded Climate Revival with Rev. Lennox Yearwood, a faith-led nonprofit mobilizing communities of color and faith to take climate action. Her leadership and artistry make her uniquely positioned to lead this global charge.
