Apple’s AirTag, first launched in 2021, has remained largely unchanged apart from minor software updates, making it one of the few devices in its lineup yet to see a major refresh. Now, reports suggest that its long-awaited successor, the AirTag 2, could finally debut at Apple’s upcoming September event, alongside the iPhone 17 series and other new products.

Reports indicate that Apple may unveil the long-awaited AirTag 2 at its upcoming “Awe Dropping” event on September 9, alongside other accessories like the rumoured TechWoven cases. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman had earlier suggested that the device was “nearly ready” for launch, fueling expectations that it will finally be introduced next month.

Pricing details for the AirTag 2 remain under wraps. For context, the first-generation AirTag debuted in April 2021 at ₹3,190 for a single piece and ₹10,999 for a four-pack, with current prices slightly higher. Whether Apple maintains a similar pricing structure for the next-gen model is yet to be seen.
One of the biggest expected upgrades is the addition of a new Ultra-Wideband (UWB) chip, on par with the one in the iPhone 15. This improvement could significantly enhance the Precision Finding feature, reportedly tripling the range from the current 10–30 meters, making it easier for users to track lost or stolen items.

Design-wise, the AirTag 2 is expected to look nearly identical to its predecessor but with meaningful upgrades inside. Rumours suggest the tracker will include privacy enhancements and a redesigned speaker that will be more difficult to tamper with or remove, addressing one of the key criticisms of the original model.
Apple’s focus on privacy comes amid concerns over AirTags being misused for stalking and tracking individuals without consent. Gurman has noted that the company is facing lawsuits over such issues, making it crucial to introduce more tamper-proof and secure safeguards in the new model. More details about the AirTag 2 are expected to surface as the launch date approaches.
