Apple’s highly anticipated iPhone 17-series is set to debut in September, and mass production of the standard iPhone 17 has reportedly begun at Foxconn’s manufacturing facilities in India. According to industry reports, the smartphone is being assembled at Foxconn’s Bengaluru unit, its second-largest facility outside China, as well as at the Chennai plant. This move marks another significant step in Apple’s ongoing strategy to diversify production beyond China and strengthen its presence in India.
The Bengaluru plant, located in Devanahalli, received project approval in 2023 and was established at an investment of approximately $2.8 billion (around Rs. 24,400 crore). The facility is already producing components for the iPhone 17 after importing key parts from China starting in June. The Chennai unit is simultaneously handling assembly to meet global demand efficiently. Apple has previously used these facilities for manufacturing popular models like the iPhone 16 and iPhone 14, and continued consumer demand has prompted the company to expand production in India further.
Apple is reportedly planning to scale up its iPhone production in India to 60 million units in 2025, compared to an estimated 35–40 million units in the 2024–25 period. This increase reflects Apple’s strategy to reduce dependency on China while leveraging India’s growing manufacturing ecosystem and skilled workforce. The production at both Indian facilities allows Apple to meet regional demand more quickly and optimize supply for global markets.

The upcoming iPhone 17-series is expected to include the standard iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max models. Additionally, Apple could introduce the iPhone 17 Air, potentially replacing the iPhone Plus-series. The company typically hosts its annual iPhone launch event in September, often on the first Tuesday following Labor Day. Alongside the new smartphones, Apple may also reveal its Watch Series 11 and the Watch Ultra 3 smartwatches, highlighting its expanding ecosystem of devices.
By initiating mass production in India, Apple continues to strengthen its manufacturing capabilities outside China, reducing risks associated with global supply chain disruptions. The dual production strategy in Bengaluru and Chennai underscores Apple’s commitment to tapping into India’s manufacturing potential while preparing for a major product launch that will cater to millions of users worldwide.
