Smith was named a special counsel to investigate Trump before his reelection to a second term.
WASHINGTON — Federal officials are investigating Jack Smith, the former special counsel who investigated then-candidate Donald Trump before his reelection to a second term.
The Office of Special Counsel on Saturday confirmed the investigation.
The Office of Special counsel is an independent federal agency. Smith was named a special counsel to investigate Trump by then-Attorney General Merrick Garland.
Trump and other Republicans, including Sen. Tom Cotton, have — without offering evidence — accused Smith of violating federal law that bans certain public officials from engaging in political activity. Smith prosecuted federal cases against Trump. Smith dropped the cases after Trump’s reelection and resigned his post.
