Big Tex’s boots are headed to Washington D.C. Here’s why

Big Tex’s iconic size-96 boots are hitting the highway to be part of an upcoming exhibition, the State Fair announced.

WASHINGTON D.C., DC — Big Tex’s boots may not be made for walking, but they recently started a long journey out of the Lone Star state, the State Fair announced.

The boots are leaving the state for just the second time in their history to be featured in a Smithsonian exhibition, according to a press release from the State Fair of Texas.

The size-96 Lucchese boots hit the road July 28 and are scheduled to arrive in the capital Aug. 1, the State Fair said. The boots will be part of the Smithsonian American Art Museum’s exhibition: State Fairs: Growing American Craft, opening Aug. 22. Renwick Gallery will house the footwear, the release states.

The boots stand 12 feet tall and they were designed by Lucchese Bootmaker, according to the press release. The current iteration of Big Tex’s boots has been in use since 2012, when a fire that started in Big Tex’s frame and quickly spread to destroy everything, the fair said.

State Fairs: Growing American Craft explores the role of state fairs in nurturing regional craft traditions, according to the press release.

“The show will feature a variety of handcrafted works and artifacts from fairs around the country, with Big Tex’s boots serving as a larger-than-life highlight of Texas’ contribution to this rich history,” the release states.
