Health officials say the person who contracted the virus is in his early 40s.
DALLAS — Dallas County Health and Human Services confirmed the county’s first case of West Nile virus in a human in 2025.
On Thursday, DCHHS announced that the person diagnosed with West Nile Non-Neuroinvasive Disease was a man in his early 40s. Health officials did not say where he may have contracted it.
According to DCHHS, a total of 98 West Nile virus-positive mosquito pools have been found in Dallas County, with the first being found in May. Last year, DCHHS said 37 human cases of West Nile virus were reported, resulting in three deaths.
“With the first West Nile virus human case, it’s an important reminder that prevention is key,” Director of DCHHS, Dr. Philip Huang, said in a news release. “With a few simple precautions — like using insect repellent, removing standing water around your home, and wearing proper clothing — you can greatly reduce your risk.”
To help protect yourself against West Nile virus, DCHHS recommends the following guidelines:
- DEET: Use bug repellants containing the active ingredient DEET and follow label instructions.
- DRESS: Wear long, loose, and light-colored clothing.
- DRAIN: Drain any standing water in or around your home or workplace.
- DUSK to DAWN: As mosquitoes are most active from dusk to dawn, limit your time outdoors during this time.
On July 7, Tarrant County Public Health (TCPH) reported its first human case of West Nile Virus.
