Dallas inmate charged with murder after another inmate died from fentanyl overdose, officials say

A Dallas County Jail inmate died from a suspected overdose, with another inmate charged with murder for smuggling drugs inside her private parts, an affidavit said.

DALLAS — A 21-year-old inmate at the Dallas County Jail died last week after a suspected drug overdose that sent four inmates to the hospital, according to a police affidavit obtained by WFAA.

The inmate, identified as Quinnetta Brinkley, was pronounced dead at 9:25 p.m. at Parkland Memorial Hospital, the Dallas County Sheriff’s Office said.

During a routine security round at the Lew Sterrett North Tower Justice Center, Brinkley was one of four inmates found in medical distress. According to the affidavit, Brinkley was found lying on the bottom bunk “not moving.” Another inmate, identified as 21-year-old Cheyanna Mather, was found lying on the floor.

Four inmates were taken to Parkland for what authorities suspect was a fentanyl overdose.

Another inmate, 26-year-old Daisy Zuniga, has been charged with murder in connection with Brinkley’s death, the DCSO said.

During their investigation, detectives found a blue bag containing a white substance that tested positive for fentanyl. Witnesses housed in the same cell told detectives that Zuniga had smuggled fentanyl, methamphetamine, also known as “Ice,” and Xanax into the jail by concealing them in her body, the affidavit states.

Zuniga was originally arrested for trespassing charges, according to jail records. She eventually “admitted to putting a plastic baggy inside her vagina” to hide the drugs from Dallas police officers who were approaching her because she was trespassing, the affidavit states.

Detectives said Zuniga also admitted to successfully making it through the X-ray scanner and a strip search without the drugs being detected during her booking process.

According to one inmate’s statement, Zuniga provided the drugs to Brinkley, Mather and Bradlei Reeves. Zuniga, along with the other three inmates, ingested the drugs multiple times that day. Brinkley reportedly became unresponsive after the second round of drug use, right after she ate dinner, the affidavit states.

Detectives said Zuniga also admitted to sharing the drugs with Brinkley and others, although she claimed not to remember all the details of the incident. Detectives determined that Zuniga knowingly delivered a controlled substance that resulted in Brinkley’s death.

Zuniga is charged with murder and is being held on a $500,000 bond. The case remains under both criminal and administrative investigation, authorities said.
