Thailand and Cambodia have been clashing at the borders for over 48 hours now. The conflict can erupt into a full-fledged war.
Amid the ongoing Thailand-Cambodia conflict, more than 150,000 people on both sides of the borders have been displaced, per reports. The territorial tension between the Southeast Asian countries is centuries old. Sixteen people have been killed in the clashes that are now spread across 12 spots along the border. Among the fatalities, 14 are Thai civilians and one is a soldier.
Per Thailand, the clash erupted after Cambodia deployed military drones for surveillance of Thai troops. Meanwhile, Cambodia accused Thailand for pulling the trigger first by advancing its troops on a Khmer-Hindu temple by the border, thereby violating a previous agreement. Amid the ongoing clash, Thailand has declared martial law across eight border districts and shut down six national parks.
Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) chair and Malaysian President have offered to mediate which has not been accepted by either side. Established in 1967, ASEAN comprises Vietnam, Thailand, Singapore, Philippines, Myanmar, Malaysia, Indonesia, Cambodia, and Brunei.
