Fact Check: Indian Postal Service Is Not Discontinuing Registered Post; Here’s What It Is Doing Instead

Fact-checking the rumors floating online regarding the closure of Registered Post, the Indian Post, that functions under the umbrella of the Ministry of Communication stated the following:

Registered Post is NOT being discontinued.

It further remarked that the service is being clubbed with the existing “Speed Post” service.”

The registered post service by the Indian postal services had been a boon for public and private sectors alike, who relied on safer, secure, and timely delivery of communication since before the advent of electronic mail. Commenced fifty years ago, the registered postal service evolved in the digital era for more reliable tracking of consignments.

One of the most used services during Rakshabandhan, the registered post brought hall tickets, ATM cards, etc., to the doorsteps even in the hinterlands with barely accessible roads. Sure, it took between a few days and a couple weeks; registering a post meant assured delivery to the addressee. So what’s next with the merging of registered posts and speed posts? The postal department stated in a follow up tweet,

Registered Post × Speed Post. What stays the same? 1) Person-specific delivery; 2) Delivery receipt and Real time tracking; and 3) Legal validity & acknowledgments. What’s better now? All the above, but faster—with the reliability of Speed Post delivery timelines.”

In another tweet, India Post remarked,

India Post simplifies mail services by unifying Registered and Speed Post to ensure streamlined operations, faster delivery, and an improved customer experience. Customers will soon benefit from real-time updates, OTP-based delivery, COD, and more.”
