Nationwide — History was made last month as 1 on 1 Technical & Theological College celebrated a powerful milestone: its first anniversary as a state-authorized, degree-granting institution, and the graduation of its first class of 154 students. Founded by Dr. Shakea Miller, the college marks a groundbreaking achievement as she became the first African American woman in Alabama to open and lead such an institution, and one of only six Black women in the entire United States to do so.
The celebration followed local recognition, as Dr. Miller was recently honored with the Publisher’s Award by The Courier Eco Latino newspaper and featured in the July issue of The Eco Latino Magazine for her leadership in education and her impact on underserved communities.
“This isn’t just about me, this is about legacy,” said Dr. Miller in her interview. “We are rewriting the rules and restoring hope for students who once believed college wasn’t in their future.”
The graduation ceremony, held on Thursday, July 31, 2025, recognized students in high-demand programs such as Paralegal, Human Resource Management, Clinical Medical Assisting, Pharmacy Technician, Medical Billing & Coding, and Administrative Medical Assisting.
Beyond the Trade: Generosity, Recognition & Vegas
Dr. Miller added unforgettable moments to the ceremony:
• Refunded half of the student’s tuition as a Dean’s List Award
• Awarded the Amy Arroyo Scholarship for continued advancement with free tuition
• Gifted graduates a 3-day, 2-night trip to Las Vegas to celebrate their hard-earned success
“These students didn’t just pass exams; they overcame real-life challenges. They deserve to be celebrated loudly and unapologetically,” Dr. Miller said.

The college is also expanding its impact with the launch of a High School Diploma Division, 1 on 1 Technical & Theological High School for adults and teens seeking an alternative education path. Classes officially begin January 5, 2026, and spots are expected to fill quickly.
