Fort Worth-based American Airlines confirmed the flight was diverted and says it’s working to get the affected passengers on a new flight.
FORT WORTH, Texas — An American Airlines flight bound for Hawaii from DFW was diverted Tuesday and forced to return to DFW Airport, FlightAware data shows, after a tsunami warning prompted by an 8.8-magnitude earthquake off the coast of Russia.
The flight was bound for Daniel K. Inouye International Airport in Honolulu from DFW Airport, but was diverted and returned to DFW Airport, according to the data from FlightAware. The flight was diverted after the massive temblor off the coast of Russia prompted tsunami warnings for a broad swath of the Pacific, including Alaska, Hawaii and the West Coast of the U.S. The 8.8 magnitude earthquake struck early Wednesday local time, but still Tuesday in the U.S., the Associated Press reported, and was centered off the coast of the Kamchatka Peninsula.
A spokesperson for Fort Worth-based American Airlines confirmed the flight was diverted and said the airline is working with the passengers from that flight to fly them to Hawaii on Wednesday. The airline says there are no related cancellations or delays Wednesday.
After the tsunami warning, a family from North Texas vacationing on the island of Maui also told WFAA that they were forced to evacuate from their hotel to higher ground after the sirens sounded.
Elizabeth Goodlet, 15, a student at Liberty Christian High School who lives in Argyle, told WFAA that her family was at the pool of their hotel when a text from the hotel informed them about a possible tsunami, and that they were forced to head for higher ground after an official warning was issued.
