Nationwide — Deric Young, a 25-year-old man from Tallahassee, Florida, has been indicted on charges of first-degree murder and aggravated child abuse in the death of 1-year-old Ky’meria German. Police say he admitted to punching the child while “playing.”
According to WLBT, Ky’meria had been left in Young’s care after her usual babysitter, her mother’s cousin, went to work. The next day, police responded to a call about an unresponsive child. Officers tried to revive Ky’meria, but she was pronounced dead at the hospital.
An autopsy later revealed that Ky’meria suffered multiple blows to the head from a closed fist, which caused her death. Investigators said her injuries showed clear signs of foul play.
Young initially denied hurting the child, but during a second interview, he broke down in tears and confessed to repeatedly punching her. According to arrest documents, he had smoked cannabis just minutes before and claimed it made him want “to play” with Ky’meria.
Young refused to attend his first two court appearances. When he finally appeared in court, a judge ordered him to be held without bond.
Ky’meria is survived by an older brother and a twin brother. Court records show her twin was in the room at the time of the incident but was not harmed.
