Doncic’s extension comes after he was traded from the Dallas Mavericks to Los Angeles earlier this year.
LOS ANGELES — Former Dallas Mavericks star Luka Doncic announced Saturday he had signed a contract extension with the Los Angeles Lakers.
The new deal comes after Doncic was traded to the Lakers earlier this year.
According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, Doncic signed a three-year extension worth $165 million with a player option for the 2028 season. The extension keeps Doncic out of free agency next summer, eliminating his 2026-27 player option in place of the new contract, Charania reported.
“Doncic could opt out in 2028 and sign a new deal for 35% of the salary cap, which projects to five years and $417 million. In doing so, Doncic would recoup all the money lost when he was traded by the Dallas Mavericks, with whom he had been eligible to sign a five-year, $315 million supermax extension this summer,” Charania wrote.
Doncic posted a photo on X to announce his new deal.
“I just signed my extension with the Lakers. Excited to keep working to bring championships to LA and make Laker Nation proud,” Doncic wrote. “Grateful to the Lakers, my teammates and all the fans who’ve shown so much love since day one. This is just the beginning.”
Doncic joined the Lakers in February after Mavericks General Manager Nico Harrison traded the Slovenian star to Los Angeles for Anthony Davis, Max Christie and a first-round pick. The Lakers also got Maxi Kleber and Markieff Morris in the deal.
Harrison’s decision drew ire from the Mavericks fanbase. Doncic’s return to Dallas last season was emotional, as he fought tears while being introduced in pre-game as a tribute video played.
With Doncic gone, the Mavs still lucked into the No. 1 overall pick, where the team selected Cooper Flagg.
Luka Dončić will play against the Dallas Mavericks as a Laker in Las Vegas in a preseason game on Oct. 15.
