Former NBA All-Star Gilbert Arenas is now facing serious legal trouble after agents swooped in and arrested him in Los Angeles on July 30. And let’s just say… this case is giving more than just a little side hustle gone wrong.

Game Night Gone Wrong!
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Gilbert Arenas has been hit with three federal charges: conspiracy to operate an illegal gambling business, operating said business, and making false statements to federal investigators. Prosecutors claim Arenas rented out his luxe Encino mansion between September 2021 and July 2022 to host underground poker games, complete with house fees (aka “rakes”)—a big no-no under California law.
And, he’s not the only one caught in the mess. At least four others were also arrested on Wednesday, including Yevgeni Gershman, who’s allegedly linked to an Israeli organized crime group. Gershman and others are accused of running “Pot Limit Omaha” games and using runners to manage chips and track cash flow. And, if that wasn’t enough, Gershman is also facing charges tied to a marriage fraud scheme involving a sham union with Valentina Cojocari, who was also arrested.

Amid the news, The Shade Room’s Instagram comments are in shambles! Social media users are jumping to Gilbert Arenas’ defense, questioning how playing cards at home could lead to federal charges. Some are even speculating that someone must’ve lost a bet and got salty enough to snitch. At this point, the innanet is just trynna figure out why the math ain’t mathin’!

Gilbert Arenas Jr.’s Health Update
On July 29th, Gilbert Arenas opened up about his son, Alijah’s, recent ACL tear. In a recent, heartfelt Instagram reel, Gilbert praised Alijah’s dedication but feels that healing is as crucial as hustling. Alijah, who committed to playing for USC in the 2025–26 season, picked up the injury during a practice with coach Eric Musselman’s squad. The setback, which comes just months after a car accident that had social media shook, is expected to sideline him for 6–8 months, possibly costing him most—or all—of his freshman year.
“The boy, he just does too much. He was fine one day and then he was hurt the next. He was doing bleacher work and he said he was running the bleachers, trying to get in shape for an hour, and he must have been irritated on the bleachers. These four, five, six months, he should learn how to sit down, rest, listen to his body, understand that as much training you do, you’ve got to recover,” the older Arenas revealed.
