Google Drive Introduces Google Vids: Web-Based Video Editing For Clips, Music, Text, Images And GIFs

Google has rolled out a new feature that makes its popular cloud platform, Google Drive, even more versatile. The company has introduced Google Vids, a built-in web-based video editor that allows users to edit their videos without leaving the browser or relying on third-party apps. The service is currently being made available to Google Workspace Business, Enterprise, Essentials, Nonprofits, and Education accounts, along with users subscribed to Google AI Proand AI Ultra plans.

This update comes as part of Google’s broader push to make Drive more video-friendly. Earlier this year, the company introduced a video transcripts feature, which automatically generates searchable transcripts for uploaded videos.

Supported Browsers and Availability

According to Google’s announcement, Google Vids works across most web browsers, but its full functionality is supported only on Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, and Microsoft Edge (Windows). Eligible Google Workspace tiers, including Business (Starter, Standard, Plus), Enterprise (Starter, Standard, Plus), Essentials (Enterprise Essentials, Essentials Plus), as well as Nonprofits and Education (Fundamentals, Standard, Plus) accounts, can use the service.

Users who previously purchased Gemini Business or Gemini Enterprise add-ons can also access Google Vids, though these add-ons are no longer sold as of January 15.

Google Vids Features and File Support

The new tool offers a range of editing functions, including trimming clips, adding background music, inserting text, and combining different media formats. Beyond videos, users can import images, GIFs, and audio to create more dynamic content.

Google Vids supports MP4, QuickTime, OGG, and WebM formats, with certain restrictions:

  • Maximum clip length: 35 minutes
  • File size limit: 4GB
  • Up to 50 objects per project (video, audio, or images)

Media can be imported directly from Google Drive, Google Photos, a computer, or via web links. Once uploaded, a new Vids project file is created, which can later be exported into standard video formats.

Advanced Options and AI Integration

In addition to standard editing, users can generate project outlines using stock media and voiceovers. Google Vids also integrates with Veo, allowing users to create clips that can be imported for editing. There’s support for screen recording, webcam capture, and preset templates, along with the ability to turn Google Slides presentations into videos.

A Step Toward Video-Centric Google Drive

By adding Google Vids and video transcripts, Google is positioning Drive as more than just a storage tool. These updates suggest a future where Drive doubles as a collaboration hub for video creation and editing, eliminating the need for external software for everyday projects.
