According to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, the driver who hit the postal worker showed signs of intoxication.
HOUSTON — A postal worker who was delivering mail was killed Saturday in a crash in northwest Harris County. And now, Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said the driver who hit him is charged.
It happened along Antoine Drive, north of West Green Road in the Northcliffe Manor neighborhood.
According to Sgt. Villacorta with the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, the driver of a Dodge pickup truck, now identified as Jose Romero, was speeding when he lost control and hit the mail truck.
“The Dodge pickup truck was traveling southbound on Antoine Drive,” he said. “The male had just fled from a minor accident up the road at Veterans Memorial and Antoine Drive. As he was fleeing, he was going at a high rate of speed. He lost control and he struck the rear of the postal truck, who was delivering mail in the residences here on the southbound side of Antoine Drive.”
The postal worker, 58-year-old Steven Marks, was rushed to the hospital but later died.
Romero was taken into custody. According to Villacorta, he showed signs of impairment during a field sobriety test. Villacorta said the Harris County District Attorney’s Office has accepted charges of intoxication manslaughter against him.
This remains an active investigation, and more details will be shared as they become available.
