Organizers with Wreaths Across America say they’re making one last push to ensure every gravesite at DFW National Cemetery receives a wreath this holiday season.
While support has surged over the past 48 hours, the group is still about 7,000 wreaths short of meeting its goal.
On Friday, organizers faced a critical deadline as they remained 16,000 wreaths short. Since then, donations have poured in, but they still need a few thousand more to cover all 59,000 veterans buried at the cemetery.
“Anything that is done by your viewers will help us close that gap,” said Larry Allen with Wreaths Across America.
Allen, a veteran and co-organizer, said the effort relies entirely on donations. Each wreath costs $17 and is shipped from Maine, creating a hard deadline to ensure they arrive in time for the ceremony.
“I’ve said before, a veteran can die twice, the first time when they stop breathing, the second time when we stop saying their name,” Allen said, becoming emotional.
He hopes North Texans will step up again to honor the sacrifice of those laid to rest at DFW National Cemetery and to continue a tradition that brings comfort to families.
“It just creates comfort, pride and reassurance that their hero is not forgotten,” Allen said.
Great Job Phil Prazan & the Team @ NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth for sharing this story.
