Starting Oct. 20, the federal judiciary will exhaust all available funds as the government shutdown continues.
DALLAS — As the government shutdown continues, Texas’ federal courts will run out of money Oct. 20, but the district court will continue to hear and decide cases.
According to a press release from the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas, the federal judiciary has exhausted all available funds. The judiciary will move to a “non-paid status” Monday, Oct. 20.
Sunday marked day 19 of the government shutdown because Congress has failed to pass a continuing resolution to fund the government.
Amid the lapse in funding, the district court will continue to hear and decide cases, the release states.
The clerk’s office will accept and process all civil and criminal filings, continue administration of the jury and grand jury system and will collect and deposit fees, the release says. The clerk’s office will also process registry fund transactions and restitution disbursements and court reporters will continue to transcribe proceedings.
Court security and screenings will continue as usual, officials said.
However, staff will generally not respond to inquiries that are not related to case administration, certificates of good standing will not be issued, and no new ceremonial events, tours and training will be scheduled, the release states. The clerk will not be able to issue pay.gov refunds.
Appointed attorneys have not been paid or received expense reimbursements since July, the release states. They will receive payment at the earliest opportunity, officials said.
“Contractors have been notified of our inability to pay,” the release states. “In the context of case administration, this could impact an interpreter’s willingness to work in federal court.”
Court staff will also not be paid for the duration of the shutdown, officials said.
Thanks for your patience and understanding as we navigate this unfortunate situation,” the release states.
