Houston man killed after marketplace meetup — Now an arrest has been made

Court documents show the suspect, Ben Nunez, faces a capital murder charge for the December shooting death of Angel Santiesteban.

HOUSTON — Houston police homicide detectives confirmed with KHOU 11 that an arrest has been made in the fatal shooting of a Houston man from back in December.

The shooting happened on Dec. 7, 2024 on Willow Beach Drive near Bellaire Boulevard, in a residential area not far from Asiatown. According to police, a man was shot multiple times after an argument broke out with a group of people. The victim tried to drive away, but he crashed into a house and collapsed outside his vehicle.

More than seven months later, court records show Ben Nunez is now in custody in connection with the case. Filings show HPD arrested Nunez Friday morning, and he was booked into jail later that afternoon.

According to court documents, Nunez allegedly shot and killed Angel Santiesteban “while in the course of committing and attempting to commit the robbery” of Santiesteban. Nunez now faces the felony charge of capital murder.

KHOU 11 spoke exclusively with Santiesteban’s mother, Esbeyde Oregon, who said she feels a sense of closure now that someone has been arrested for her son’s death.

“I’m more than happy that they’re going to pay for what they did to my son, and I hope they never come out from jail. I do not want another mother to go through this. I don’t want no more lives taken away,” Oregon said.

Oregon told KHOU 11 that Santiesteban had gone to Willow Beach Drive for a planned meetup through Facebook Marketplace. KHOU 11 asked Oregon if she knew anything more about what her son was doing and what might have happened during the encounter.

“I just know that he was trying to sell something,” Oregon said. “He was trying to sell something on Facebook Marketplace. He got contacted, and he didn’t know this was going to happen. He went on his own, and they got what they wanted, and they took his life away.”

Oregon said the loss of her son still feels fresh, all these months later.

“To hear that your son was killed is the worst thing that can happen to a mom. The worst thing. Something inside of you just dies, and you see things differently, and I have missed him since that day,” Oregon said.

Oregon said Santiesteban was a kind and friendly young man who had turned 20 years old just days before the shooting. She described him as a good student who graduated from YES Prep Brays Oaks Secondary School. He was also an avid soccer and basketball player.

Oregon said her son was working in construction and had plans to go to school to become an electrician. It was a dream, she said, that will sadly never be fulfilled. So now, she is clinging to her memories of Santiesteban to keep his legacy alive.

“A happy person, a loveable person. A caring person, and he was so loveable to me,” Oregon said.

According to court filings, Nunez is expected to be in court Monday morning.

KHOU 11 reached out to Houston police for additional details about the case, but as of Sunday night, we were still waiting to hear back.
