Corey Mitchell, an award-winning journalist, has joined Inside Climate News as a senior editor overseeing bureaus in the Midwest and New York and correspondents covering climate science and renewable energy.
Mitchell was previously an editor at The Seattle Times, where he led a team of reporters covering education in Washington state, and The Conversation, which publishes articles by academic experts for general readers. Prior to that, he worked as a reporter for the Center for Public Integrity, Education Week and The Minnesota Star Tribune.
His coverage has been recognized by multiple journalism organizations, from Investigative Reporters and Editors to the Institute for Nonprofit News and the National Association of Black Journalists. He was part of teams that won national Edward R. Murrow and Sigma Delta Chi awards, and an investigation he co-reported about school systems’ failures to support homeless students as federal law requires prompted more government funding and a new state law.
“Over the course of his career, Corey Mitchell has worked and flourished in a succession of distinguished newsrooms,” said Vernon Loeb, ICN’s executive editor. “We’re thrilled that he’s now part of our team as someone who can direct and edit reporting on the planet’s most urgent stories involving climate change, environmental protection, climate justice and the preservation of our natural world.”
ICN, one of the nation’s oldest and largest environmental newsrooms, covers climate change and the environment from its state bureaus across the U.S. as well as internationally, staffed by correspondents focusing on fossil fuels, renewable energy, superpollutants, agriculture, climate science, oceans, conservation, and international law and the rights of nature.
Mitchell lives in suburban Washington, D.C., where he will be based. He is a graduate of the University of Michigan with a degree in general studies.
