The Kountze Lions aim for a successful 2025 season, relying on senior leadership for improved performance.
KOUNTZE, Texas — The Kountze Lions are aiming for a turnaround in the 2025 high school football season, and head coach Todd Paine believes senior leadership will be the key.
The Lions finished last year with a 5-5 record, going 2-4 in district play. But Paine says this season feels different, largely because of the experience his core players have gained over the past three years.
“Three years ago, I had to start a freshman core,” Paine said. “Now those guys are seniors.”
That group includes Camden Johnson and Kade Bumstead, who Paine says bring not only skill but also maturity to the team. Both players are looking forward to enjoying their final year in a Lions uniform but are equally focused on winning.
“The experience they earned will pave the way this year,” Paine said, expressing confidence that his senior class can set the tone for the rest of the roster.
Kountze will open its 2025 campaign on the road against Hemphill at 7:30 p.m. on Aug. 29. The Lions’ home opener is scheduled for Sept. 19 against Buna, a matchup expected to draw strong community support.
For Paine, the mission is clear, translate the hard-earned lessons of past seasons into consistent performance on the field. With a senior class that has grown together since their freshman year, the Lions believe they have the foundation to make that happen.
As preseason practices continue, the focus in Kountze is on preparation, leadership, and turning experience into victories when the lights come on later this month.
