In protest of the 50% tariff slapped by the American President Trump, the Chancellor of Lovely Professional University (LPU) has banned soft drinks with US origin from campus. Mr. Ashok Kumar Mittal, the founder and chancellor of the university, is also a Rajya Sabha MP. For the politician, the move is sort of Swadeshi 2.0 and a clear message to the world that India cannot be messed with. The university has now withered sales of soft drinks like Coca-Cola and other beverages that are inherently American brands.
The AAP leader remarked,
“Back in 1905, the Swadeshi movement was able to cut imports significantly, targeting British clothes and products across segments. If our forefathers could do it under colonial rule, why can’t we do it today? I think America has underestimated India’s strength and resolve. The time has come to show them our true strength and resolve.”
In his tweet post the LPU chancellor wrote
If the US goes ahead and imposes 50% tariffs on Indian exports, Lovely Professional University will not sit quietly.
He added,
Let me remind the US once again—we will ban all American soft drinks on campus if the US doesn’t withdraw the unfair tariffs by 27th August.
He further urged,
I urge every patriotic Indian to join my call and boycott American products in their own small ways. Let’s unite and bring the US back to the table for discussion, not coercion.
