Nation’s biggest migrant detention center set to be established in West Texas by 2027

The U.S. Department of Defense announced on July 21 that it has awarded a contract to build a new immigration detention center at Fort Bliss, an Army post in El Paso.

Virginia-based company Acquisition Logistics LLC was given nearly $232 million to build and run the 5,000-bed tent camp.

The camp will be the country’s largest immigration detention center, according to a recently announced contract.

It will be a “5,000 capacity, single adult, short-term detention facility,” for the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Texas Republican Gov. Greg Abbott said on X the state will “help arrest, jail, & deport illegal immigrants.”

The establishment is in support of Presidential Executive Order 14159, “Protecting the American People Against Invasion” which focuses on improving the enforcement of immigration laws and addressing unauthorized entry and presence in the United States.

The federal agency said the facility is expected to open by September 2027.
