Nearly 200,000 play kitchens recalled after toddler’s death reported

The products were sold online through KidKraft.com, Amazon.com, and Walmart.com between 2018 and July 2025, priced between $120 and $270.

WASHINGTON — Nearly 200,000 model play kitchens are being recalled due to serious safety concerns that resulted in a child’s death.

Backyard Kids, LLC of Plano, Texas, has issued a voluntary recall of approximately 192,000 KidKraft Farm to Table Model Play Kitchens, originally manufactured by KidKraft, Inc.

According to the recall, the play kitchens pose significant strangulation and asphyxia hazards to young children. The primary danger stems from hooks used to hold toy kitchen accessories, which can catch children’s clothing if they climb on the counters or crawl through openings at the back of the units.

In February 2023, a toddler in Oregon died after his shirt got caught on one of the hooks while climbing and crawling through the opening at the back of the play kitchen. The 23-month-old child couldn’t rescue himself and died from strangulation and asphyxia, the recall stated.

The recalled play kitchens feature black and light gray coloring with wood-like countertops. Model number 53411 appears on a sticker affixed to the back of each unit. The Chinese-manufactured products were sold online through KidKraft.com, Amazon.com, and Walmart.com between 2018 and July 2025, priced between $120 and $270.

Despite KidKraft, Inc. filing for bankruptcy in May 2024, Backyard Kids has committed to providing free replacement hooks for all affected units. Consumers should immediately discontinue use, remove original hooks, and contact Backyard Kids at 800-882-0234 or recall@kidkraft.com for replacement parts.

Backyard Kids has voluntarily agreed to recall and provide free replacement hooks for all units, even though only about 400 of the 192,000 recalled units were sold to consumers by Backyard Kids.
