North Texas corrections officer dies after accidental shooting while moving, sheriff’s office announces

Johnson County mourns corrections officer Nash Dawdy, 22, who died after an accidental shooting while moving into his new apartment.

CLEBURNE, Texas — A 22-year-old Johnson County corrections officer has died after an apparent accidental shooting while moving into his new apartment, authorities confirmed Tuesday.

Investigators believe Nash Blaine Dawdy, of Cleburne, was shot on Friday, July 25, by accident during the moving process. The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office (JCSO) announced that Dawdy was pronounced dead at 1:07 p.m. on Tuesday, July 29, after several days on a ventilator.

JCSO described Dawdy as “a beacon of kindness who illuminates the lives of all who knew him,” who had been looking forward to living independently for the first time. The sheriff’s office said he was planning on attending the Police Academy to one day become a Patrol Deputy.

In honor of Dawdy’s decision to be an organ donor, the hospital caring for him will fly the donor flag for 24 hours this week, and an Organ Donor Walk is planned for Thursday or Friday, officials said.

The sheriff’s office noted that no further details about the circumstances of the shooting will be released until the investigation is complete.
