Off-duty officer injured in crash involving tractor-trailer in Hutchins

An off-duty Hawk Cove officer suffered serious injuries in a crash on I-20, officials say.

HUTCHINS, Texas — An off-duty officer with the Hawk Cove Police Department was injured in a crash involving a tractor-trailer Friday afternoon, according to the Dallas County Sheriff’s Department (DCSD).

The accident occurred on Interstate 20 and Dowdy Ferry Road near the Trinity River in Hutchins. The city of Hutchins is about five miles north of Wilmer. According to TxDOT, the two westbound lanes were shut down and reopened about 45 minutes later.

WFAA’s Chopper 8 showed a mangled pickup truck and traffic snarled for miles.

The DCSD said the off-duty officer was working traffic control for the construction crews in the area. 

The officer was taken to the hospital in stable condition, and another person was also taken to the hospital for treatment, the department said.
