OpenAI’s large-scale education initiative in India is being rolled out under the OpenAI Learning Accelerator, which is debuting in India before any other market. The programme is aimed at making AI a tool that deepens understanding of subjects rather than just serving as a shortcut for quick answers or assignments.

To lead this effort, OpenAI has appointed Raghav Gupta, former head of Coursera in India and Asia Pacific, as the Head of Education for India and APAC. Gupta will focus on building partnerships with schools, universities, and government organisations while also helping teachers adopt AI in practical, classroom-friendly ways. He highlighted that Indian education is at a stage where AI can drive real improvements in learning outcomes and prepare students for a future where AI is a core skill.

OpenAI is also investing in research through a $500,000 partnership with IIT Madras for a long-term study on AI in education. The project will analyse how tools like ChatGPT can reshape teaching methods and provide lasting benefits to students. This underlines OpenAI’s commitment not only to adoption but also to understanding the impact of AI on learning.

Signalling the importance of the Indian market, OpenAI confirmed plans to open its first office in New Delhi later this year. India already ranks as the world’s largest student market for ChatGPT. To make the platform more accessible, OpenAI has launched a localized subscription tier priced at ₹399 per month with UPI support, alongside the OpenAI Academy, an AI literacy programme developed in collaboration with the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology.
