OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, is set to launch its first corporate office in India later this year, marking a significant step in its global expansion. The office, located in New Delhi, will formalize the company’s presence in one of the fastest-growing AI markets in the world. OpenAI has already begun hiring to expand its local team, signaling a major commitment to building AI for India, and with India, according to CEO Sam Altman.
Currently, OpenAI has just one employee in India, Pragya Misra, who joined last year to lead public policy and partnerships. Why OpenAI is Entering India
India ranks as ChatGPT’s second-largest market after the United States. To tap into this massive user base, OpenAI recently introduced a more affordable monthly subscription plan at $4.60, alongside a free basic plan and other premium options. The country has the largest population of student users, with weekly active users quadrupling in the past year, highlighting the rapid adoption of AI tools across education and enterprise sectors.

Challenges and Competition
Despite the growth potential, OpenAI faces hurdles in India. Legal challenges have arisen, with news outlets and book publishers claiming that the company used their content without permission to train ChatGPT, a claim OpenAI has denied. The company also faces stiff competition from rivals such as Google’s Gemini and AI startup Perplexity, both of which offer advanced plans for free to many Indian users.
Collaborating with IndiaAI
OpenAI has committed to contributing to the $1.2 billion IndiaAI Mission, a government initiative to build large and small language models tailored for the region. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw welcomed OpenAI’s presence, highlighting India’s leadership in digital innovation and AI adoption. He emphasized the company’s potential role in ensuring trusted and inclusive AI that benefits every citizen.
OpenAI is preparing to host its first Education Summit in India this month, followed by the country’s inaugural Developer Day later this year. These events will bring together developers, startups, and enterprises to advance AI adoption and innovation. Local businesses are already leveraging OpenAI’s tools in areas such as AI-powered agriculture, recruitment, and governance, demonstrating the transformative potential of AI across industries in India.
