The driver didn’t stop. Now police are looking for a black sedan with front-end damage and shattered glass.
DALLAS, Texas — In the Rains family home in Arlington, the pictures say everything 23-year-old Seth Rains can’t anymore.
“He had everything,” said his mother, Cyndi.
Photo by photo, Rains is seen stepping into adulthood, graduating from Texas Tech with a degree in finance, starting his first job in Fort Worth, and recently moving to Austin for a new opportunity. In one frame, he wears his cap and gown. In another, a headshot for the jobs he just landed.
“He moved two months ago to Austin because he took a new job down there,” said his father, Clint. “He was a leader for sure.”
“He had a whole future ahead of him,” Cyndi added. But that future was stolen early Sunday morning.
Rains and his friends had just left a Green Velvet concert in Deep Ellum and were walking to a friend’s apartment when they reached the intersection of Market Center Boulevard and Turtle Creek. Police say a black sedan drove through the intersection and hit Rains as he crossed the street. His friends ran to the vehicle, shouting that someone had just been struck.
The driver paused, then drove off, they say. “I’m thankful he didn’t suffer,” said Cyndi.
“He had a very peaceful look on his face when we got to see him in the hospital bed,” Clint said. “We’ll be glad to see him at the funeral home that way, but he’s gone.”
Rains was known for mentoring youth on financial literacy and was a member of the BYX fraternity at Texas Tech. He had just started a new chapter in life and was passionate about helping others, his family told WFAA.
His parents are now juggling funeral arrangements, unimaginable grief, and a search for accountability.
“We’re sorry for them too,” Clint said of the driver. “They’re gonna have to be responsible for this as well. There are no winners in this.”
According to witnesses, the black sedan involved likely has damage to the driver’s side and a shattered window. They believe the driver is a man and may have been riding with a female passenger. If you have any information, please contact the Dallas police.
Despite the heartbreak, the Rains say they’ve felt tremendous support.
“We’ve felt an overwhelming sense of love and support from our friends and family,” said Cyndi.
A GoFundMe has already raised more than $30k for funeral arrangements, which are scheduled for next weekend, the family said.
For Seth’s parents, each day now brings a choice: grieve, fight, remember. They choose all three, they say. Because that’s what love looks like when it’s taken.
