Pixel 10 Becomes First Phone To Support WhatsApp Calls Via Satellite: What It Means

Google has officially unveiled the Pixel 10 series, and while the flagship brings several upgrades, one standout feature could be a game-changer: support for WhatsApp voice and video calls over a satellite network. This means Pixel 10 users will be able to stay connected even in areas with no cellular or Wi-Fi coverage, making the device especially appealing for those in remote regions or frequent travelers. Google confirmed that this satellite-powered WhatsApp calling feature will roll out soon, setting the Pixel 10 apart from its competitors.

Google has confirmed that its new satellite-based WhatsApp calling feature will launch on August 28, the same day the Pixel 10 series goes on sale. This feature will allow users to make WhatsApp voice and video calls via satellite when their phones show no cellular or Wi-Fi signal, keeping them connected even in remote areas.

In a teaser video shared on X, Google showcased how the system will work. When a WhatsApp call comes through via satellite, users will see a satellite icon appear on the status bar, signaling the connection. This gives a simple and clear indication of when the feature is active, ensuring users know they’re connected off-grid.

Google clarified that the feature will only be available through select carriers and may come with additional charges. It remains unclear whether the satellite feature will support only calls or also allow messaging through WhatsApp. Even so, the addition is being viewed as a major step forward, as Apple’s satellite solution currently limits users to sending emergency texts only—without calling options.

Beyond smartphones, Google is also bringing satellite connectivity to wearables. The upcoming Pixel Watch 4 LTE will be the first smartwatch with direct satellite access. Powered by a Snapdragon W5 Gen 2 chip, the watch will connect to geostationary satellites to send urgent help messages, extending safety and connectivity features to more devices in Google’s ecosystem.
