Lamar Cardinals aim for playoffs in 2025 under Pete Rossomando, bolstered by strong defense and veteran QB Robert Coleman.
BEAUMONT, Texas — As the 2025 chapter of Pete Rossomando’s tenure at the helm of the Lamar Cardinals begins, the program is putting in the work for another winning season.
2024 marked significant progress for Big Red, with the Cardinals finishing second in overall defense in the Southland Conference and earning a four-week stay in the national rankings after their upset win over No. 20 Weber State.
Now beginning the 2025 chapter in the story of Rossomando’s legacy at the helm of LU’s football program, a lot of work has been done to hopefully provide yet another winning campaign.
“I think our first units on both sides of the ball are as good as we’ve had here since I’ve been here,” Rossomando said in a press conference at the Dauphin Sports Complex on August 17.
Beginning at the quarterback position, Big Red will have a veteran presence filling the role with California product Robert Coleman taking the reins again following his original departure via the transfer portal.
“Coach Ross gave me a call and asked if I wanted to come back and it was a no-brainer for to be with the guys again,” Coleman said in an interview. “It’s my second family out here. Being here for the last two years, what Coach Ross is building out here, what he’s done in the past two seasons like how could I not want to come back and be a part of it?”
The Cards lost a 1,000-yard rusher from the 2024 season in Tyler Chapel Hill Product Khalan Griffin.
That being said, the coaching staff believes this year’s roster has more depth than in past seasons.
“A healthy Major Bowden, a healthy Damien Moore those guys have been an unbelievable one-two punch in fall camp so far,” Coach Ross said when discussing the depth of his running back room. “That room is very healthy right now and they work well together, it’s going to be by committee.”
With having the second-best defense in terms of scoring, LU still watched as eight of their starting eleven departed.
Big Red attacked the recruiting trail and the transfer portal with much intent and has seen impressive strength be reborn on the defensive side of the football.
“I think we’re deep on defense and I think we have a really good chance to stop people and be able to hold up against big teams,” Rossomando said in terms of how well the defense can compete this season. “Playoffs is where we want to be at the end of this thing… that’s our goal.”
The Cardinals open the season on the road against the University of North Texas in a primetime matchup, with kickoff set for 7 p.m.
