Ponder High senior dies following sledding accident

A 17-year-old high school student injured in a sledding accident in Ponder on Monday has died.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, Caden Nowicki died Thursday after being hospitalized following a crash.

The DPS said Nowicki was in a kayak being used as a sled, pulled by an ATV, along the 400 block of Amyx Hill when it left the road and crashed at about 2:30 p.m. The DPS said Nowicki was thrown from the kayak and hit a fence.

Nowicki was taken to Medical City Denton with serious injuries. On Friday, the DPS said Nowicki died on Thursday.

The DPS said the driver of the ATV, 22-year-old Jackson Long of Yukon, Oklahoma, was not injured in the crash. A passenger on the ATV, 18-year-old Austin Erickson, was also not hurt.

Nowicki was a senior at Ponder High School, where he was a member of the football team. A vigil for students is being held at 6 p.m. Friday at First Baptist Church in Ponder.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing, and it’s unclear what charges, if any, will be filed.

Nowicki’s death is the third death of a North Texas teenager from a sledding accident in last week’s winter storm. Elizabeth Angle and Grace Brito, both 16-year-old sophomores at Frisco’s Wakeland High School, died this week after a sledding accident where they were being towed behind a motorized vehicle and crashed.

An 18-year-old woman in Elmo was also hurt while sledding behind a moving vehicle when she was thrown into a piece of equipment.
