U.S. Rep. Al Green, D-Texas, alongside several organizers affirmed their commitment to removing the 47th president from office, during a July 23 news conference on Capitol Hill, during which they presented a petition calling for the president’s impeachment.
The petition, which garnered over a million signatures, was delivered on July 23 by these organizations to the leadership of the House Judiciary Committee at the Rayburn building. The organizers delivered the signatures to Reps. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, and Jamie Raskin, D-Md.

Standing on the steps of the Capitol next to constitutional lawyer John Bonifaz, activist Alexandra Flores-Quilty, of Free Speech for the People, as well as organizers from Women’s March, Green said he will continue to file articles of impeachment against the 47th president, calling his actions “an assault on democracy.”
“We have a president who has been in the business of devolving American democracy into authoritarianism,” Green told reporters and organizers. “But I thank God above that there is a Constitution, and that in that Constitution there is a remedy for a renegade president, and that remedy is impeachment.”
One article has already been filed, the Texas lawmaker said, with another 18 articles yet to be brought against the president. He forced a floor vote on a motion to table the first article, in which he and 78 other Democrats voted against tabling it. He intends to bring articles up to vote regardless of who is in the majority following the 2026 midterm elections.
“Similar to the sword of Damocles, [
the articles]
are there over his head,” he said. “I am going to do what I can to make sure that impeachment is called to the attention of the Congress of the United States.”

He also said that Johnson’s early adjournment of the House would not affect the timing of the filing of these articles or any other efforts aimed at putting Republican votes on the record. Speaking exclusively with the AFRO, Green said that Congress must “let people know they are worthy of change.”
“We can adjourn for several weeks, but that won’t change the flow of things,” he said. “ The American people believe that we have made a mistake with this big ugly steal. Because you’re taking from the poor giving to the very, very wealthy. And the American people want to see some change.”
Green and Free Speech for the People anticipate that the petition will garner over a million signatures at the conclusion of the August recess, which is when the other articles are expected to be filed in the House.
