REPLACED, the upcoming game from Sad Cat Studios, has resurfaced with a new development update trailer. It also confirms a revised release window. The update comes four years after its original reveal in 2021. Likewise, this offers a long-anticipated reassurance to fans.
Where Development Stands Now
Despite major setbacks, Sad Cat Studios has stayed committed to its promise and more.
“We’ve always been trying to do what’s right for the project, which in turn means delivering to you a truly special experience. The good news is that we are now very close to finishing production,” wrote Game Director Yura Zhdanovich in a statement on Steam.
In line with this, the recent update trailer showcased what the game has in store for fans. It also presented a fresh look at the game’s progress. Among other exciting details, Sad Cat Studios seemingly improved environments, enhanced animations, and polished the visual style.
Release Window
REPLACED is going to launch on PC and Xbox Series X|S in Spring 2026. A final trailer is also planned for later this year and will reveal more details.
What Went Wrong?
Before the latest reveal, REPLACED had missed its original launch window set for 2022. According to a report from GameSpot, Sad Cat Studios encountered unexpected external challenges that affected the timeline. Specifically, the team behind the game was originally based in Belarus. So, the conflict between Russia and Ukraine impacted their workflow. Due to safety concerns, the studio had no choice but to relocate. The disruption understandably caused delays. However, it was further compounded by the inherent difficulties of game development, resulting in continuous postponements.
“We know that our community is incredibly excited to play REPLACED, and it’s no secret that it’s taken longer than we initially thought to deliver that to you all – we apologise for that,” noted Zhdanovich on Steam.
Storyline and Gameplay
REPLACED brings players to an alternate 1980 America, where fast-paced combat meets a dark, dystopian tale. Players take on the role of R.E.A.C.H., an artificial intelligence unwillingly stuck in a human body. Likewise, the character is grappling to understand and survive the harsh realities of Phoenix City. In this world scarred by a devastating nuclear disaster, lawlessness and corruption prevail. As a result, the ones in power see humans and their organs as commodities.
While the full gameplay is unknown, the Steam report says that the pixel art action game focuses on a single-player experience. At the same time, it combines cinematic platforming sequences with free-flow action combat.
