MANILA, Philippines — House of Representatives Speaker Martin Romualdez on Sunday described the return of Manny Pacquiao to the boxing scene as “victory in itself” despite the match ending in a draw.

Mario Barrios defended his world welterweight crown as the judges decided on a majority draw on Sunday (Philippine time) at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. This was Pacquiao’s return match, four years after his loss to Yordenis Ugas via unanimous decision.

“Today, we witnessed two warriors leave it all in the ring. And though the judges called it a draw, for us Filipinos, the mere return of Manny Pacquiao to the global boxing stage—at 46 years old—is a victory in itself,” Romualdez said in a statement.

Romualdez noted that “it may not be the ending we hoped for,” he said that the performance reminded the world who Pacquiao and Filipinos are— “tough, brave, and with dignity.”

“Manny showed the heart of a true champion: fearless, relentless, and full of pride for his country. In every punch, he brings the Philippines’ name. In every move, the determination of a Filipino who never gives up is felt,” Romualdez stated.
