iOS 26 Advanced Fingerprinting Protection
Apple had announced at the WWDC 2025 that the Advanced Fingerprinting Protection feature would be expanded to all browsing by default. This feature is not new as it was previously rolled out for the private browsing tabs with the iOS 17 in September 2023. But with the iOS 26, it will be available for all Safari tabs, starting this September.
Fingerprinting is an appalling activity done by companies to monitor a user’s activity across the web. So it is like a digital fingerprint which is generated based on the user’s activity on their device including specific settings, customised fonts and third-party browser extensions.
This form of tracking stays even after clearing the cache, history and storage. The Advanced Fingerprint Protection feature comes into play here as it provides random information and changes the hardware and software details instead of showing the true user data which makes it difficult for the companies to track users.
Apple is not the only one to do this as in 2020, its competitor Firefox brought this feature to its browser where the third-party requests from companies that fingerprint users are blocked.
