Samsung has been a pioneer in the foldable smartphone market, and with over five years of development under its belt, the company’s latest release, the Galaxy Z Fold 7, showcases just how far foldable tech has come. This new book-style foldable has been widely praised for its slimmer form factor, larger 8-inch inner screen, and a more refined, intuitive user interface.
But what really sets the Z Fold 7 apart is its improved hinge durability. Samsung claims that the device can endure over 500,000 folds under ideal conditions, a bold statement that’s now being put to the test by users.
A South Korean tech YouTuber recently conducted a real-time durability livestream, folding the Galaxy Z Fold 7 an astonishing 200,000 times by hand. This five-and-a-half-hour session gave us a realistic glimpse into how the device performs under prolonged physical stress, far beyond average daily use.
Throughout the test, several milestones revealed both the strengths and minor weaknesses of the device. Early on, between 6,000 to 10,000 folds, the YouTuber encountered a “forced reboot error,” which continued appearing at roughly every 10,000 folds. While not critical, it hinted at potential internal stress.
By 46,000 folds, the hinge began making slight creaking sounds, yet the phone remained fully functional. At 75,000 folds, things took an unexpected turn when a mysterious black liquid leaked from the hinge, though it disappeared quickly and did not reoccur. A noticeable deepening of the crease was reported at 105,021 folds.
Despite these concerns, the phone pushed on. However, by 175,000 folds, the top and bottom earpieces stopped working, a sign of hardware fatigue. The hinge also became noticeably smoother, losing some of its original elasticity, though the phone could still open at various angles.
After completing 200,000 folds, the inner display remained responsive with no dead pixels or major display issues, which is impressive considering the manual, high-stress testing environment.

While it didn’t hit Samsung’s 500,000-fold claim, it’s important to remember that those tests are conducted under tightly controlled lab conditions. In real-world use, with pauses, lower fold frequencies, and more varied environmental exposure, the Z Fold 7 shows remarkable resilience.
This test ultimately demonstrates that Samsung’s foldables are maturing, and the Galaxy Z Fold 7 is a significant step forward in both durability and user experience. For tech enthusiasts or power users, it’s a foldable that truly holds its own under pressure.
