Hello Reader,
Last weekend I had a family call for my cousin’s birthday. She is 76 years young, and it was all women on the call. It was magical. We spent time getting to know each other, laughing, and talking about life. There is something sacred that happens when women gather, when we exchange ideas and stories, when we sit together and remember who we are.
On the call, I met one of my cousin’s friends who used to be the editor of Ebony Jr. Do you remember that magazine? I used to read it when I was younger. Now, at 91 years old, she has just finished researching and writing her latest book on Harriet Tubman. Ninety-one. Writing. Publishing. Creating. That’s what I mean when I say it’s never too late.
How many ideas, how many dreams, are we sitting on, waiting for the “right” moment? How many visions do we shrink because they feel too big? And how many times have we recoiled when opportunity finally knocked?
I’ll never forget the time back in the day when my brother and I used to visit Paris for his work. And let me tell you, I fell in love with that city. Every corner whispered my name. The food, the art, the culture, and yes, the men. Paris loved me, and I loved it back. I made friends, I explored, I dreamed.
One day, I received a call from my meditation teacher. She wanted me to come by and meet with her. I was nervous, but when I walked into her living room, I knew something was about to shift. She was magical, and sure enough, she introduced me to a friend who had a business in Paris. They were looking for someone to work with them, specifically an American. My dream of living in Paris was right there, placed in my lap.
I remember feeling hot and cold at the same time. Excited. Terrified. I thought about it for a few days, and then, you already know, I turned it down. As free-spirited as I was, I couldn’t find the courage to leap. I passed the opportunity to a friend instead. She went. She worked. She met a man. She built a life in Paris, a beautiful life. When I visited her later, I saw her thriving. I teased her and said she had stolen my life. She smiled and replied, “You didn’t lose it. You gave it away.” And all I could do was laugh, because she was right.
That’s the lesson. If you are asking the universe to send you an opportunity, make sure you are preparing yourself to say yes. Because when you dream from a clear and grounded place, when you hold a vision for your future, what comes back will be bigger and more beautiful than you could imagine.
May your next chapter be the best yet.
Peace and light,
Monica Wisdom
