Sha’carri Richardson Speaks Out After Being Arrested at Airport for Pushing Her Boyfriend

Nationwide — Olympic track star Sha’Carri Richardson is speaking out and taking responsibility following her recent arrest. The 24-year-old was taken into custody at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport on July 27 after a dispute with her boyfriend and fellow sprinter, Christian Coleman, turned physical. She was charged with fourth-degree assault and later released the next day.

According to All New Hip Hop, the couple — who have been together for two years — began arguing verbally near a security checkpoint. While the cause of the disagreement remains unclear, surveillance footage reportedly shows Richardson shoving Coleman hard enough to send him into a nearby column. Coleman, who did not retaliate, attempted to walk away and seek help.

The footage also allegedly captures Richardson throwing a pair of headphones at Coleman, striking him in the process. Police determined there was probable cause to arrest her, and she was booked at the South Correctional Entity in Des Moines, Washington.

Nearly two weeks later, Richardson addressed the incident in a video posted to her Instagram Story on August 12. Without directly mentioning Coleman or the arrest, she shared a message of self-reflection and personal growth. “I see myself. I’m taking this time to not only see myself, but give myself a certain level of help that overall is going to reflect who I truly am in my heart, in my spirit… not allowing this moment, but accepting this moment to be more,” she said.

She went on to emphasize accountability, adding, “I refuse to run away… but face everything that comes to me head-on because everything on the other side is greater. What you got to go through in order to get there.”

Coleman also commented on the situation about a week earlier, calling it “a sucky situation all around.” He said he did not believe Richardson should have been arrested, acknowledging that both have personal growth to do. “Everybody… has things to work on,” Coleman said. “I’m in the business of extending grace and mercy and love.”
