Slack has launched a new premium feature called Slack Lists, designed to help users manage projects more effectively. With Lists, team leads can create tasks, assign them to team members, and track priority, due dates, and status. The feature brings workflow management directly into Slack, putting it in competition with tools like Trello and Asana. However, it will only be available for premium users, not on the free tier.

The company explained that scattered platforms often result in silos, duplicated efforts, and reduced productivity. By integrating task and workflow management directly into Slack, enterprises that already rely on the platform can now streamline updates and collaboration without shifting between multiple tools.

Slack stated, “Year after year, business leaders are spending money on tools that promise to help them reach their goals, but those tools often don’t deliver on that promise. In fact, even with all the solutions available today, only 34% of projects are completed on time and within budget. The reason, according to The Wall Street Journal, is that it’s challenging to find one project management tool that satisfies employees’ needs.”

Slack Lists functions much like existing task management solutions such as Trello and Asana. Users can create projects, set up tasks, assign them to teammates, and define deadlines. Tasks can be created manually or converted directly from conversations, ensuring that important discussions translate into actionable steps without leaving the Slack environment.
The feature allows creators to assign tasks with specific priorities, due dates, and statuses. Multiple tasks can be grouped into projects, where they can be sorted, filtered, and combined for smoother workflow organization. This flexibility gives teams more control over project visibility and tracking, aligning Slack with other established project management platforms.
For assignees, tasks come with direct notifications and a task window that provides context on the action required. Slack Lists also integrates with Canvas for richer project documentation and with Workflow Builder to automate routine task creation. Together, these integrations make Slack Lists a powerful tool for both individual productivity and team-wide collaboration.
