Trump’s Tariff has another casualty. Gaming consoles. In its latest update, Sony’s video game console brand PlayStation stated financial roadblocks that led to a surge in prices. The company remarked,
Similar to many global businesses, we continue to navigate a challenging economic environment. As a result, we’ve made the difficult decision to increase the recommended retail price for PlayStation 5 consoles in the US starting on August 21.”
It further dropped the revised hiked prices for the consoles. The updated recommended retail prices for PlayStation 5 consoles in the US are as follows:
- PlayStation 5—$549.99
- PlayStation 5 Digital Edition—$499.99
- PlayStation 5 Pro—$749.99
The company, however, claimed that the prices for the accessories in the store will remain unchanged.
The recommended retail prices for PlayStation 5 accessories remain unchanged, and we have no other price changes to announce for additional markets.”

Reactions poured in on social media, with netizens blaming Trump’s Tariff over the fiasco. One user memed, “Thanks, Mr. President.” Another user commented, “I hope all of you understand that this is a direct result of Trump’s tariffs lol.” A third user suggested, “Switch to PC gaming.”
One user jibed, “PS5 is sold at a profit. There’s zero reason to increase the price. The price increase is more profit on top of the profit.” Another ranted, “That’s a steep price just to play Astro Bot.”
Some users recalled that, “The first console generation that I can ever remember in my lifetime where prices of consoles have been raised over time instead of lowered.” One user suggested, “I would have boosted accessory prices instead, like Nintendo did. Hopefully you’ll have your PS6 manufactured out of harm’s way, unlike the PS5.” Others dropped memes.
