Spoon Announces Surprise Show Tonight at Sagebrush

Here in the live music capital of the world, the surprise pop-up show has become a favorite pastime. This morning, hometown indie rock outfit Spoon announced a last-minute gig at South Austin venue Sagebrush, which will take place this evening. It’s not the first time the group has announced a surprise show at a small venue, as they played at Hotel Vegas back in 2014 around the launch of their album They Want My Soul.

Spoon recently released two new singles, “Guess I’m Fallin in Love” and “Chateau Blues,” with an off-the-cuff announcement that boasted a bit of rock ‘n’ roll attitude. In a social media post sharing the tracks, the band seemed to say: Why sit around waiting for an album rollout when you’ve got some new material you’re stoked on?

As for tonight’s venue, the fact that the band chose Sagebrush speaks volumes. While the South Austin spot hosts a tremendous amount of country and honky-tonk music, it has also showcased some fantastic rock bills since it opened shortly after the pandemic. It’s co-owned by Denis O’Donnell, whose tenure in this town stretches back to opening the White Horse and booking at The Hole in the Wall prior to that. Undoubtedly, Sagebrush is emerging as a favorite among local musicians. The chandeliers dangling overhead and warm wooden rafters tell a great story about where Austin is right now, and it’s perfect that Spoon is leaning into it as a homegrown act.
