Spotify rolls out private chat feature for music lovers

WASHINGTON — Spotify is giving users a new way to share songs, podcasts and audiobooks directly in the app.

The streaming service has announced its brand new Messages feature will begin rolling out to Free and Premium users aged 16 and older in select markets. The feature creates one-on-one conversations where people can share content, react with emojis and send texts without leaving the Spotify app.

Spotify said users have asked for “a dedicated space within the app to share songs, podcasts, or audiobooks they’re excited about with friends and family, and an easy way to keep track of recommendations.” 

The service added that recommendations remain one of the most powerful ways for listeners to discover new music and shows, with friends and family already sharing Spotify content millions of times each month. The goal of the Messages feature is to centralize those exchanges in a dedicated space.

“When listening to a song, podcast, or audiobook in the Now Playing view, tap the share icon, select a friend, and hit send,” Spotify said. Suggested contacts will appear based on prior sharing activity, collaborative playlists or shared Family and Duo plans.

Spotify emphasized that Messages will complement sharing on other platforms such as Instagram, TikTok and WhatsApp. 

Users will have the ability to accept or decline requests, block accounts, or opt out entirely. Conversations will also be encrypted, and Spotify said it will use proactive detection technology and moderator review to prevent harmful or illegal content.

Spotify added that the move is “just the beginning,” as it continues “building and refining the experience for more Spotify users around the globe in the months ahead.”
