Taylor Townsend aired out Jelena Ostapenko on ESPN after a heated US Open post-match argument, alleging Jelena came for her character. Shortly after beating her opponent, Jelena allegedly told Taylor she had “no class, no education,” sparking backlash from tennis fans, some of whom found the remark to be “racist.” Jelena hit back on Instagram, attempting to clear her name before deleting the post as the backlash only intensified, prompting her to issue yet another response. This tennis fiasco is serving more heat than the court itself. Here’s what happened…

Taylor Townsend Accuses Jelena Of Insulting Her Class And Education
Taylor didn’t hold back when she spoke to ESPN, revealing that Jelena insulted her after their US Open clash. “She told me I have no education, no class,” Taylor said, recounting Jelena’s harsh words. She added that there’s no bad blood on her end, noting she’s unaware of any personal issues Jelena might have with her.
Jelena Ostapenko also challenged her, saying, “See what happens if we play each other outside of the U.S.,” to which Taylor boldly replied, “I’m excited. Bring it.” She emphasized she’s never one to back down from a fight, and made that clear during their exchange.
When asked if the comments carried racial undertones, Taylor acknowledged the stigma in the Black community about being labeled uneducated but didn’t directly call it racist. “Whether it had racial undertones or not, that’s something she can speak on,” she said, focusing instead on her tournament run. Taylor took pride in her performance, stating, “I let my racket talk.” She’s celebrating moving to the next round while Jelena is packing up and leaving.

Jelena Responds To Racism Allegations
Elsewhere, Jelena Ostapenko skipped the post-match press conference but took to Instagram to clap back. She claimed the drama stemmed from Taylor’s lack of sportsmanship during their match. She explained that Taylor didn’t apologize after a netball in a key moment. “There are some rules in tennis which most of the players follow,” Ostapenko wrote, calling it a first in her career. She implied Taylor’s behavior might be tied to playing in her home country.
After her initial statement sparked even more backlash, Ostapenko deleted it and posted a new response, per USA TODAY. “I was never racist in my life,” she declared. She stressed her respect for all people, regardless of their background. Furthermore, she said that coming from a small country limits her support and chances to play at home.
“Unfortunately, I come from such a small country that I don’t have huge support and a chance to play in my homeland.”
