Texas Democrats evacuated after bomb threat at Chicago hotel, party says

Texas Democrats said their members were forced to evacuate their hotel after receiving a bomb threat in Chicago.

CHICAGO — Texas Democrats in Chicago were forced to evacuate their hotel this morning after a bomb threat was made against the members there, the party and representatives said.

Democratic Caucus Chair Rep. Gene Wu and several other Democratic leaders said a threat was made Wednesday morning against members of the Texas House Democratic Caucus.

“We are safe, we are secure, and we are undeterred,” said Wu, Rep. Ramon Romero, D-Fort Worth and Rep. Barbara Gervin Hawkins, D-San Antonio, in a statement. “We are grateful for Governor Pritzker, local, and state law enforcement for their quick action to ensure our safety.”

Two other members of the Democratic caucus said in statements that the threat was a bomb threat.

“Early this morning, a bomb threat forced us to evacuate our hotel. Thankfully, no one was harmed,” Rep. Ann Johnson, D-Houston.

Both Johnson and Rep. John Bucy, D-Austin, called out Attorney General Ken Paxton for “reckless rhetoric” after Paxton said in a social media post that he would “hunt down” Democrats who left the state.

“When the Attorney General tells people to ‘hunt us down,’ it’s not just politics — it’s a threat to our safety,” Johnson said. “Extremism is dangerous. Continuing to go further and further down the path of incitement and intimidation is dangerous. And this is the perfect example. We won’t be intimidated.”

Before disclosing the threat and evacuation, the Texas House Democrats postponed a planned press conference with Sen. Dick Durbin, citing a “change in schedule beyond our control.”

“Texas Democrats are not deterred — we are determined,” Bucy said. “We will push through the threats and the noise to keep fighting for our constituents, our democracy, and our country. This is a fight worth having.”
